This also a (ekphrastic) pun. Scarabs are goldbugs, the name of the novel by Rick Powers (Goldbug Variations) and as a pendant were a favorite piece of costume jewelry for my mother (ladybug, ladybug fly away home ) in the last years of her life (your house is on fire and the children are alone ). For some reason I connect this whole memory with “Araby,” Joyce’s mystery of a boy’s lost love.

Dangle recalls the necklace and the peninsula in Ireland.
