Friction, sb. [a. F. friction, ad. L. friction-em, n. of action from fricare, to rub.]

  1. The action of chafing or rubbing (the body or limbs). (Formerly much used in medical treatment.)
  2. The rubbing of one body against another; attrition.
  3. Physics and Mech. The resistance which one body meets in moving over another body.
  4. fig.; esp. of the jarring or conflict of unlike opinions, temperaments, etc.
