Links can discover and test invisible limits by combinatorial play and variations, or by returning us to something repeatedly from new directions. They can also try linking in wild variation, almost random connections that may limn an absence.
This wouldn't be helpful if the connections were totally random; that deadens attention. But it could be random within a vocabulary or combinatorial within given options, twisting them. Better still if the variation and links are guided by some sense of relevance, no matter how odd. For that it's not necessary that I have a pre-known proposition that I'm trying to express because I could be trying to suggest a crossing or a direction where there might be new spaces to erect propositions.
