Searching the Web

Serendipity has its part to play, but it only takes you so far when you're searching for material out on the World Wide Web. There are a  number of search engines available on-line that enable you to do keyword searches for particular sites which have subject matter that interests you.

Different search engines use different databases, so the results of a search on one are often completely different to those of another. Sites periodically change the software they're using too, which can impact for good or ill. Many search engines run local versions - Excite and Yahoo, for instance, both have .co.uk sites as well as the standard .com. It's worth checking out the tips on advanced searching that each engine offers. There are millions of Web pages out there and refining your search techniques pays dividends in narrowing down the results that the  engines will come up with.

Some popular search sites:

Alta Vista
AOL NetFind
Ask Jeeves
Dogpile
Google
