Network Status

Network Status

We suggest you save this page to your hard disc (File: Save As) and use the links to check the status whenever you have problems connecting to trAce.

If you have problems accessing the trAce site(s):

1. Wait ten minutes and try again.

2. Check it's not your machine

    • Click Refresh
    • Empty your cache and reboot your computer and try again

3. Check whether you are having problems with one or all of the trAce servers (all the following are different servers on the University network)

If all three are not running, check the main University website at http://www.ntu.ac.uk, if this is down then it's possible there is a problem with the University network.

The national academic network JANET is next stop. Check the pages at JANET covering the network status at http://nottingham.netsight.ja.net/ to see if there are any problems with the Academic Network in the UK. (Click on Regional and look for Nottingham Trent University)

4. Check the system of your Internet Service Provider. Bookmark (add to your own Favourites) their network status page. Example: dial pipex network status page

5. Run a traceroute to see where the problem is.

There are many different ways of performing a traceroute depending on your operating system. If you're using Unix, you just need to type "traceroute domain.com" at the command line. If you're a Windows user, you can run a traceroute from the dos prompt by typing in "tracert domain.com" (detailed instructions below). If you're using a Mac running OS X, click on the "Network Utility" icon within the "Utilities" folder, then click on the "traceroute" tab. If you're running a Mac with an older operating system than OS X, you'll probably need to download a traceroute program such as WhatRoute [free].

TraceRoute
Traces the route from info-x.co.uk to trAce.
If there are problems near trAce and the University they will show up in the later numbered steps, and if it stops, please make a note of the point at which it stops and let us know (when the system is back up of course, or our email won't be working!).

To run a traceroute on a Windows [only] platform:
1. Open the "start" menu
2. Open "programs"
3. Click "ms-dos prompt" on programs menu
4. At prompt in the ms-dos dialogue box, type in "tracert"
-- then type in a space on same line
-- then type "trace.ntu.ac.uk" or the trAce I.P. number [152.71.0.105]
5. Hit "enter"

For other traceroutes, go to http://www.traceroute.org

6. Inform us at trace@ntu.ac.uk of any problems giving details of time, your location and the specifics of the problem
