trAced Links: Desert Island Short Stories

Why read short stories? If you were cast away on a desert island which ones would be indispensible reading?

Here are some of the responses received when these questions were posed in the Reading Conference at the trAce WebBoard. Whether you already love short fiction, or remain to be convinced, try out some of the recommended short story reading and decide for yourself.

"I like shorts for their quick payoff, so to speak, they get right to the action and pack it in." (Kate Jackson)

"Particularly useful for short Tube journeys...also I like being introduced to a writer via a short piece." (Mary Cavill)

"Short stories can be like photographs...something intense and thought-provoking, an atmosphere as much as a plot." (Pauline Masurel)

"I read magazine short stories avidly while waiting at the dentists." (Margaret Penfold)

"I guess the best way of getting the publishers to print short story collections and anthologies is to keep buying them and promoting them by word of mouth, gifts, etc, to as many readers as possible, the dollar return is always the bottom line when it comes to publishing." (Sharon Rundle)

"I sometimes find a long novel only gets in the way of a fairly hectic lifestyle, whereas a collection of short stories sustains and nurtures me ...I think we're due a return of the fashionable anthology. Shall we start a movement?" (Jane Tandy)
